I wanted to take the time to discuss an issue that drives me up the wall when I see new construction homes and buildings being built; the issue is under-sizing the amperage of the electrical service panel (mis-termed as a “fuse box” by most folks).

Folks, If you are building a home, no matter what the size, install nothing less than a 200 amp panel—PLEASE! Too often I see electricians advise on lower amperage sizing, and customers willingly compromising. It’s not that the electrician is necessarily nefarious in this recommendation—though some are probably salivating over future work replacing it with a larger system. The fact is, installing a 200 amp panel over a 100, 125, or 150 amp panel is probably $100.00 at most. And you’re getting potentially double the power potential for that meager investment--all things considered.

The point is, to get a larger electrical panel costs a fraction of what it would cost to replace in the future, and your future self, or a future property owner, will thank you. I’ve even seen real estate transactions take into account an existing panel size. So go big, and proudly join the 200+ amp club.
